About

Emerging from the shadows between sound and sight, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (TKDE) crafts music that feels like a forgotten dream — suspended somewhere between the surreal and the sublime. Its sister project, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation (TMFDC), channels predominantly the same musicians, alongside a rotating cast of guests, into pure improvisation and experimentation — a rawer, more spontaneous counterpart to TKDE’s cinematic compositions.
Founded by Jason Köhnen and Gideon Kiers as an audiovisual project, TKDE evolved into an international ensemble with a sound entirely its own, drawing together dark jazz, ambient, electronic, experimental and cinematic music. Through a series of influential releases and immersive live performances, the group built a passionate worldwide community and left a lasting mark on the experimental music landscape. Its reputation only grew in the years following its original run, as the music continued to reach new listeners and inspire an enduring cult following.
More than a decade later, the seemingly impossible happened: The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble returned. The surprise reunion was met with an overwhelming response from its international community, transforming what could have been a fleeting return into the beginning of an unexpected new chapter.
Today, Jason Köhnen, Gideon Kiers, Hilary Jeffery, Charlotte Cegarra, Eelco Bosman and Michaela Lilla Bos are bringing TKDE back to stages around the world. The renewed live shows reconnect audiences with the atmosphere and intensity that made the ensemble so distinctive while pushing the music forward through the collective improvisation at its core — making this return not simply a look back, but a living continuation of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble.
